Savoring Words Cherokee – “The Language of Flowers”

The language of flowers

Body of Wisdom is bringing back Savoring Words, Book Club/Dinner Club, to celebrate the 10 year anniversary!  Reserve your place at the table in Cherokee for Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 6-9 pm.  The book is The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

This event is for you –  if you want to read a good book, but don’t want to join and commit to a regular monthly book club.  Yet, you would like to share in a discussion of the book with other women over a sit down meal related to the subject of the book.   This would be a great gift, or a perfect time to ask your mother, daughter, sister, or friend  to join you in sharing this evening together.  If you are interested, then here’s what to do.  Follow these instructions:

1) If you are interested in reading this book and participating in the actual event, then you must sign up ahead of time to attend, space is limited;

2) Immediately reserve your place at the table by emailing Mary at or texting Mary at 712 221 7039;

3) Next, you read and finish the book before you come to the event on Wednesday, August 26 th at 6:00 pm, with your book in hand to 124 E. Main St., Cherokee, IA;

4) When you arrive,  you can then make your payment of $40.00/person.

Body of Wisdom promises you will be surprised and delighted with an interesting book conversation and a beautiful meal presented by Mary.  The event will also include some other related activities. In other words, all you need to do is read the designated book, The Language of Flowers, and then just show up!   Space is limited and cancellations must be made 48 hours ahead of time to allow for any wait list or change of menu.

Save your summer reading for this wonderful book about love, happiness, flowers and their meaning.  The story line is:  The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life. And when she’s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

It will be held at Body of Wisdom, 124 E. Main St., Cherokee, IA.  Fee is $40.00/person.  So remember to RSVP as soon as you can by email or by text to 712 221 7039.

The Myth of Aging

Deer oh Deer

Deer are everywhere in Iowa.  We look out our farmhouse windows, and there they are.  They are abundant.  And, now I see their faces and antlers everywhere; on walls, on napkins, on pillows.  Even a real deer is standing next to Taylor Swift inside her mansion in her new music video.  In my high school in Pennsylvania, our head baton majorette wore a sequined football helmet with deer antlers.  Yep, that’s right, we were raised in true deer country, and we thought nothing of it….
